This is the most important procedure. Firstly water the area in which you wish to grow lawn. You could add fertilizer to encourage weed growth and unwanted grasses . When these are established remove all weeds and grasses manually or with a weed killer. This must be done 10 to 14 days before earthworks take place. Ensure large rocks and stones are removed for the area.
When the soil is dry, wet a few days prior to soil prep. Apply compost or lawn and garden fertilizer – this is a general recommendation made in absence of soil test.
Keep area moist for first two weeks, and avoid puddles.
Finally, ‘Soil Excavation’ – keep in mind drainage, especially regarding ground levels next to pathways.
Tip: Driveways should be 150mm – 200mm higher than areas to be planted so grass does not overtake these areas.
